WellRead September Selection: Girls by Kirsty Capes

In Girls, Mattie and Nora navigate the ways they were failed by their mother and the people who should have been looking out or them, they discover the ways they. too, are capable of failing one another.

There were a number of brilliant novels about sisters released this year (Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and Heartsease by Kate Kruimink, anyone?) and this month's selection, Girls, by Kirsty Capes is here to join the ranks.

Partly told in interview form and set on the fringes of the art world, Girls explores the lives of Mattie and Nora, the daughters of prolific artist Ingrid Olssen, in the aftermath of her death. As they set out to preserve their mother's legacy, they grapple with their past, what their future holds and how much they can trust the people around them.

The relationship between these sisters is unique, delicate and fraught. As Mattie and Nora navigate the ways they were failed by their mother and the people who should have been looking out or them, they discover the ways they. too, are capable of failing one another.

Girls has some darker themes (would it be a WellRead selection without them?!) but Capes balances them with lighter moments to create a realistic portrait of complicated, interwoven lives.

Plus, Mattie and Nora (and Beans!) head off on an American road trip that will have you craving the heat of summer, long stretches of road and the characters you meet along the way. Perfect in the lead up to an Aussie summer.

We hope you enjoy the adventure.
