WellRead December Kids Selection: Off to the Nursery by Alice Oehr

There’s no one we trust more than Alice Oehr to take us on a journey to the nursery – after all, she’s taken us to the market and shared her favourite foods in alphabetical order … she knows what she’s talking about.

There’s no one we trust more than Alice Oehr to take us on a journey to the nursery – after all, she’s taken us to the market and shared her favourite foods in alphabetical order … she knows what she’s talking about.

In Off to the Nursery Alice is showing us all how it’s done, from making a list before heading out, to planting our seedlings and practising patience while we wait for our new plants to grow.

We could spend hours at the nursery looking at all the colourful plants and imagining what it would be like to grow lots and lots of strawberries so we could munch on them any time we wanted. We hope this book inspires your next trip to the nursery; we’d love to see if you try your hand at growing something, no matter how big or small!

Happy reading!

Extra things to think about and do:

  • As you read, can you spot any fruits or vegetables that you’ve tried before? Which are your favourites?
  • If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, can you see any plants that are growing in your garden?

  • Alice points out some animals and bugs that make gardens grow – have you ever seen any of these creatures in your garden or around your house?

  • Olives can take up to four years to grow fruit … that’s a long time! Plants take a long time to grow, just like us. What’s the longest you’ve ever had to wait for something? What helped you to be patient?

  • Can you find:
    • A blank spot on the seed wall – it must be a popular type of plant!
    • Strawberries that aren’t quite ripe yet. Ripe means ready to eat.
    • A cheeky bird eating a blueberry.
    • 5 different kinds of tomatoes.
    • A worm with a hat.
    • 2 frogs swimming in a pond (and one watching on!)
