WellRead December Selection: The Degenerates by Raeden Richardson

We’re not too proud to admit that we were drawn in by its gorgeous cover art but once we sat down with it, we were greeted by one of the most compelling Australian debuts we’ve ever encountered.

We are so excited to be bringing The Degenerates to your letterboxes. We’re not too proud to admit that we were drawn in by its gorgeous cover art but once we sat down with it, we were greeted by one of the most compelling Australian debuts we’ve ever encountered and we just had to share it with you.

The Degenerates is an interwoven tale of four characters across India, Australia and, eventually, America. Richardson focuses on what connects us all and explores modern loneliness with a sharp eye, acknowledging lives lost in the margins.

Our Melbourne subscribers will be pleased to see their city at the heart of this story and, what’s more, it’s not the tourist destination on display. No, the laneways are in focus, gritty, familiar, somehow simultaneously claustrophobic and full of potential, but not always friendly.

Before you dig in, now’s your chance to leave your concept of realism at the door. Mysticism and symbolism are rife within these pages, creating a feeling of unease that threads throughout the stories, but also a sense of possibility. Going with the flow will serve you well here and you’ll be rewarded with rich characters you’ll carry with you.
