WellRead's February 2025 Kids Selection: Over or Under by Pip Harry and Hilary Jean Tapper

Over or Under? is a story of bouncing back when things don’t go to plan. We hope you love it as much as we did!

We love the beach, don’t you? The smell of sunscreen, a day of playing in the sand and the salty water – even grown ups feel like kids again at the beach!

In Over or Under?Maisie has lots of fun at the beach, collecting shells, playing with her little brother and jumping little waves. When she decides she’s ready to face the bigger waves, she learns that the ocean is powerful. To keep having fun, she needs to be brave, confident and ready to try new things.

We’ve been dumped by big waves at the beach more times than we can count. Many times we’ve felt like Maisie; upset and tired and ready to never get back in the water. But just like Maisie, we’ve had so much more fun when we’ve been ready to get back out there and try again!

This is a story of bouncing back when things don’t go to plan. We hope you love it as much as we did!

Extra things to think about and do:

  • What is your favourite thing to do at the beach?

  • Have you ever been dumped by a wave at the beach? What did it feel like?

  • Why do you think Maisie doesn’t want to go back out into the ocean after she’s been dumped by the big wave?

  • Even though Maisie was nervous about getting back in the water she was very brave and tried again! Can you remember a time when you had to be brave?

  • Can you find:

    • Two lifesavers ready for action.

    • Someone doing yoga on the beach.

    • A crab who also likes to go under waves.

    • A seagull gliding in the air along with Maisie as she bodysurfs.

    • Red and yellow flags to swim between at the beach.
